Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
Why not start off with the Father of our Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or Gandhiji? Gandhi attended University College, London, where he studied law and jurisprudence. He was later invited to enroll at the Inner Temple, to become a barrister. The inner temple was one of the fours Inns of court, which were professional associations for lawyers and judges. He then worked as a barrister in both London and in South Africa, before becoming part of the Indian National Freedom Struggle.
Cornelia Sorabji
Cornelia Sorabji was the first female advocate in India. She was the first female graduate from Bombay University and the first woman to study law at Oxford University. She returned to India and started fighting for the causes of equality for women, for those who were forbidden to communicate with the outside male world and who had no access to property rights. She was not considered as a barrister in India until 1923 because of a law that barred women from practicing.
Anna Chandy
Anna Chandy was the first woman to serve as the judge of a high court in India. After attaining a postgraduate degree, she went on to become the first woman from Kerala to get a law degree. She dedicated her career and life to fight for women’s right to work and demanded quotas for women in government jobs. She then went on to become the first female judge in India, serving the Kerala High Court for a total of eight years.Â
Arun Jaitley
Arun Jaitley, the former finance minister of India, graduated from Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi with an honors degree in BCom. He then went onto pass LLB from the University of Delhi faculty of law. Having served as a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India as well as the Delhi High Court, and went onto become the Additional solicitor General of India. He has fought cases for PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Madhavrao Scindia, etc.
Soli Sorabjee
Soli Sorabjee graduated in law from the Government Law College in Mumbai and was admitted to the bar in the year 1953. He later went on to become a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India and the Solicitor General of India, as well as the Attorney general of India. He is one of the lawyers who have strived for the protection of Human rights and Minority rights and some of the important cases he fought include those of Maneka Gandhi, IR Coelho, BP Singhal, etc.
Fali Sam Nariman
Another one among the famous lawyers in India is Fali Sam Nariman. After completing a degree in law from the Government Law College of Mumbai, he went on to become a distinguished Indian Constitutional Jurist and a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India. He also served as the President of the Bar Association of India as well as the Additional Solicitor General of India. A few important causes that he fought include that of the Bhopal gas tragedy, SP Gupta, TMA Pai foundation, etc.
Ram Jethmalani
An inspiration to many lawyers in India, Ram Jethmalani has had an eventful life. A special resolution was passed for Ram Jethmalani to receive his LLB degree from the Government Law College of Mumbai at the age of 17, a time when the minimum age to become a lawyer was 21. Afterward, he earned his LLM degree from SC Sahani Law College, Karachi. He has served as India’s Union Law Minister, Chairman of the Bar Council of India, and the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Some of the famous cases fought by him include those of Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi assassinations, Afzal Guru, 2G Spectrum case, etc.
Mukul Rohtagi
Mukul Rohtagi, the current Attorney General of India, graduated in law from the University of Mumbai. One of the most famous lawyers in India, he has worked as the chief legal advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has fought on famous cases such as the 2002 Gujarat Riots, Ambani brothers’ gas supply case, YK Sabharwal property suit, etc.
Ashok Desai
Ashok Desai, one of the most prominent lawyers in India, went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics, after completing his law degree from the Government Law College in Mumbai. He then went on to serve as the Attorney general of India as well as the Solicitor General of India. Famous cases fought by him include those of Vineet Narain, Narasimha Rao and Parliamentary privilege, Sakharam Binder, etc.
