Pakistan’s 23rd Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has been elected.
Shehbaz Sharif, the country’s opposition leader, was elected unopposed as the country’s 23rd Prime Minister.
The 70-year-old leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will succeed Imran Khan, who was recently deposed from power in the National Assembly following a no-confidence vote. Shehbaz Sharif is Nawaz Sharif’s brother.
Quick Fact: Sharif was elected Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan after receiving 174 votes. The victorious candidate in the House of 342 should receive at least 172 votes.
National Affairs
For technical collaboration, UIDAI has partnered with ISRO.
For technological collaboration, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), MeitY, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO, Hyderabad.
The National Research and Development Council (NRSC) will create a Bhuvan-Aadhar webpage to provide information and locations for Aadhaar centres across India.
With a high-resolution backdrop of natural-color satellite imagery, the portal will enable complete geographic information, retrieval, analysis, and reporting for Aadhaar centres.
Quick Fact: UIDAI has provided Aadhaar numbers to over 132 crore people and assisted over 60 crore people who have updated their Aadhaar numbers.
Sports
Ravichandran Ashwin is the first player in the history of the Indian Premier League to retire.
Ravichandran Ashwin of the Rajasthan Royals became the first player in IPL history to be retired out during a high-octane match against the Lucknow Super Giants.
Rajasthan’s innings was brought back from a difficult stage when they were four down for 67 runs thanks to Ashwin’s vital effort of 28 runs off 23 balls.
The veteran all-rounder made the selfless decision to retire out in the last over to create room for Riyan Parag in the middle, who has a somewhat better capacity to clear the boundary rope in the final overs.
Awards
Nilamani Phookan, an Assamese poet, received the 56th Jnanpith Award.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, presented Nilamani Phookan, one of Assam’s most known poets, with the country’s highest literary prize, the 56th Jnanpith for the year 2021.
After Mamoni Roisom Goswami and Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya, Nilmani Phookan is the third Assamese to win the Jnanpith Award. The award came with a citation, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs. 11 lakh.
Quick Fact: In 1990, the octogenarian was given the Padma Shri, and in 2002, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.
Banking
The KVGB launched the Vikas Siri Sampat-1111 programme.
P Gopi Krishna, Chairman, revealed that the 1,111-day deposit pays 5.70 percent interest to the general public and 6.20 percent to senior citizens during the introduction of the “Vikas Siri Sampat-1111” scheme in Dharwad.
A minimum deposit of 10,000 rupees and a maximum amount of two crore rupees are permitted under this scheme.
The Indian government owns it through the Ministry of Finance. Across Karnataka, the bank has 629 locations.
