Ecuador was the first country to grant wild animals legal protection.Â
Ecuador, a South American country, became the first in the world to grant wild animals legal protection. The country’s top court has ruled in favour of a woolly monkey named “Estrellita” who was kidnapped from her home and placed in a zoo, where she died a week later.
The Court has finally stated that animals have rights that are protected by natural rights.
Quick Fact: Estrellita was kidnapped from the wild when she was a month old so that librarian Ana Beatriz Burbano Proao might have her as a pet.
National Affairs
Mumbai and Hyderabad have been named ‘Tree Cities of the World’ by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).Â
Mumbai and Hyderabad have been named the ‘2021 Tree Cities of the World’ by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Arbor Day Foundation. The award was given to the two Indian cities for their “commitment to developing and maintaining urban trees and greenery in order to build healthy, resilient, and happy cities.”
The UN’s ‘Tree City of the World’ initiative provides guidance, help, and global recognition for towns’ commitment to their urban forest, as well as a framework for healthy, sustainable urban forestry.
Quick Fact: It’s worth noting that Hyderabad has been recognised for the second year in a row. Hyderabad was the only city in India to be named a “2020 Tree City of the World” in 2021.
Appointments
India’s G20 chief coordinator, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, has been appointed.
The government has formally stated that Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla will take over as G20 top coordinator next month. The selection is noteworthy since India will take over the G20 presidency from Indonesia on December 1, 2022, and will host the G20 Leaders Summit for the first time in 2023.
On April 30, 2022, Shringla will step down and be succeeded by foreign secretary-designate V M Kwatra, who is currently India’s ambassador to Nepal. Piyush Goyal, the Indian Commerce Minister, will continue to serve as the G20 sherpa.
Sports
Jamshedpur hosted the first Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery Tournament.Â
In Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, the first Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery will be conducted at Tata Archery Academy. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has sanctioned a budget of Rs 75 lakh for the six-phase Khelo India National Ranking Women Archery Tournament.
The tournament will be held in the senior, junior, and cadet categories in both recurve and compound events, and will follow the World Archery Rules.
Quick Fact: The competition is being organised by the Archery Association of India (AAI) in partnership with the Jharkhand Archery Association and TATA Steel.
Banking
Nagaland will receive a $2 million loan from the Asian Development Bank to help with urban development.Â
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India have agreed to provide Nagaland with a $2 million project readiness financing (PRF) credit for the design of climate-resilient urban infrastructure, institutional capacity improvement, and improved municipal resource mobilisation.
In Nagaland’s 16 district headquarter towns, the PRF loan will be utilised to help build climate-resilient water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, and urban roadways, as well as enhanced access for the poor and vulnerable.
Quick Fact: The name of the project is Nagaland Urban Infrastructure Development Project.
