How to become a lawyer? First and foremost, do not choose law as a career if you have absolutely no interest in it.  A career in law takes passion in legal reasoning. Without passion, the law can become a tedious job sector, without offering enough pay. It would take you a long time to practice law, having to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees and procuring a license. Step 1: Get a Bachelor’s Degree in Law

After the 12th standard, you can go about various ways in completing your undergraduate studies in Law. You can either choose a 5 year LLB program or a three year LLB program. The 5 years integrated LLB program assists you in completing a study about law, along with another degree of your choice, that will later help in furthering your career prospects. The most commonly seen 5 year LLB courses are BA LLB, BCom LLB, BBA LLB and BSc LLB. The three year LLB program will not have the additional degree and will just train you in LLB.

Step 2: Get experience through Internships

In order to get good placements and further your career in law, you should be able to build up a good resume and have practical experience working in the field. For this, you can do internships in legal firms or with advocates during and after your graduation. Remember, having practical experience is always a plus point.

Step 3: Specializing

After graduation, you will have two most important options before you- either to start working or to go for higher studies and specialize in a specific legal field. If you choose the latter, you can go for a postgraduate degree in LLM, which will again widen your horizons and job opportunities in the field of law. The degree will last for a maximum of two years and will help you in specializing in the areas such as civil law, tax law, environmental law, criminal law, etc.

Step 4: Enroll with the State Bar Council

The most important step in becoming a lawyer is to have a license to practice. So, after your studies, whether graduate or postgraduate, make sure to enrol with the State Bar council. After you clear the All India Bar Examination conducted by the Bar Council of India and get a license, you can join a court, an organization of your choice, or start a practice on your own. There are many emerging disciplines and areas which you can join after getting your license viz. the corporate world, private practice etc.

Where to Study?

One of the best places to study law in India is the National Law Universities. In order to get an undergraduate degree in law from the prestigious National Law Universities., you might have to prepare for CLAT.
