January 1
Global Family Day

NRI Day/ Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
This day is celebrated for all the non-resident Indians. Their contribution to the development of India is great. This day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa, in 1915. Gandhiji is also known as the first Pravasi Bhartiya.
January 11
Death Anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri
The second PM of Independent India, Lal Bahadur Shastri left for his heavenly abode on this day in 1966. He was a prominent figure in India’s struggle for Independence. He is famous for his slogan – ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’. He was also known for his simplicity and down to earth living.

National Youth Day
This day marks the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand. His philosophies were a great source of inspiration for the youth and hence this day is celebrated as National Youth Day. He played a great role in glorifying India’s name in various corners of the world. His famous speech at World Religions Conference in Chicago is still extolled as one of the greatest speeches of all time on the matter.
January 15
Indian Army Day
On this day, in 1949, Field Marshal Kodandera M Cariappa took over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. The last serving British Commander-in-Chief was General Sir Francis Butcher. Hence, Indian Army Day is celebrated.
January 23
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti
Another prominent leader of the freedom struggle, Netaji Subhash Chandra bose was born on January 23, 1897. He formed the Indian National Army (INA) or the Azad Hind Fauj. he played a great role in World War 2 as well.
January 24
National Girl Child Day
Gender-based inequalities cannot be ignored in India. This day is celebrated to highlight these inequalities. Also, the importance of education for girls, their nutrition, legal rights, medical facilities, and much more are highlighted.
January 25
National Voters Day
Every year on January 25, National Voters Day or the Rashtriya Matdata Diwas is celebrated. The aim behind this is to motivate young people to take part in the election process. This was first celebrated in 2011 in lieu of the Election Commission’s Foundation Day.
National Tourism Day
Tourism is an important aspect of the Indian economy. Hence, this day is celebrated to boost tourism by raising awareness amongst people and educating them about it.
January 26
Republic Day
The Indian Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949. However, it came into effect on January 26, 1950. The democratic system of government was also adopted on this day. And hence, every year, we celebrate Republic Day.
International Customs Day
The Customs Organisation celebrated International Customs Day (ICD) each year. The motive is to identify and appreciate the role of the customs officials. They play a great role in the maintenance of border security. Also, the challenges and working conditions of this job are highlighted.
January 28
Birth Anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai
Another nationalist leader in the freedom struggle, Lala Lajpat Rai was born on January 28, 1865. He is also known as ‘the Lion of Punjab’ and ‘Punjab Kesari’. He is known for initiating the foundation of the Punjab National Bank. The Animal Science University in Hisar is named after him.
January 30
Martyrs Day/Shaheed Diwas
This day is celebrated on the National level. Father of the Nation – Mahatma Gandhi was laid to rest after he was shot dead by Nathuram Godse on this date, in 1948. 3 other revolutionaries are remembered on this day. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar as well as Shivaram Rajguru were hanged to death by the British (March 23). The sacrifice of all the leaders in the freedom struggle is of great importance to each individual. It is because of their sacrifices that we are able to live in an Independent India.
World Leprosy Eradication Day
The aim of this day is to focus on achieving zero cases related to leprosy disease in children. Disabilities are not a result of an overnight issue, but a prolonged disease or illness for sure.
